Action!
Improv is best seen live, but here are few examples of The Starter Kit's shows to give you an idea of what you'll get when you see us perform in person.
The Starter Kit's Second Anniversary Show
For our first anniversary, we handed out squirt guns to the audience because Austin was in the middle of a heatwave, the The Hideout's air conditioner wasn't working properly, and we simply thought it would be fun. For our second anniversary, with everything we've learned and how we've all grown as performers, we said the hell with it and handed out squirt guns to the audience again. This is that show.
Murder!
The Starter Kit presents: Murder! is an improvised murder mystery with a different distinct detective for each show. The detective grills the different suspects, leading to a series of flashbacks with the murdered victim. Often, the flashbacks have to be told again with some variance, slight or major, due to the fact that virtually everyone is as an untrustworthy narrator and has something to hide. In the past, as the detective, we've had an anal retentive federal agent (a la Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks), a new-agey surfer dude named Phoenix, an old blues musician who speaks in metaphors and anecdotes, and a former child detective (a grown-up Encyclopedia Brown) who faces the biggest case of his career. The murder itself is a red herring as it usually comes in second to many other stories discovered along the way and character development within the show. Also, every show features two special guests from local improv/sketch troupes and shows, one of which is discovered as the murdered victim within the first scene. The guests this night were Aden Kirschner and Eric Heiberg.
SITUATION: Comedy
In SITUATION: Comedy, The Starter Kit doesn't just improvise a standard sitcom, but a sitcom clip show. Come see your favorite moments that never were with flashbacks to life-changing moments, hilarious montages, touching memories (created on the spot), and an assortment of characters you've come to love these past few fictional years. It's a nostalgic look back at a brand new show each time. This episode happened on April 15, 2010, and had the great audience-suggested title of "Those Swell Guys Down the Street".
